Here’s what you need to know about registering to vote in Texas

The deadline to register to vote in this year’s Nov. 5 election is Monday, Oct. 7.
Although registering is not complicated, Texas’ registration process does have some quirks that mean you’ll have to plan ahead.

U.S. citizens who are a resident of the county where they submit their voter registration application and are not convicted felons can register. People who are under 18 can still register if they will be that age by or on Election Day.
Although some states allow registration at the polls, Texas law requires that you register at least 30 days before a given Election Day. That means to vote on Nov. 5 – or during early voting that starts Oct. 21 – you need to register by Oct. 7.
No. However, you can fill out an online application that you can then print, sign and mail to your county voter registrar. You also can request a printed voter registration form. But remember that your application has to be received by the county registrar by Oct. 7.
Registering when you get a driver’s license or state identification card or renew, replace or update your existing one might be the easiest way to get the job done.
When you do any of these things, you’ll be asked whether you’d like to register to vote. It’s that easy.
When you register to vote, you need to include information from your Texas driver’s license or state ID card. If you don’t have either of those, you can use the last four digits of your Social Security number. You also need to give your address. If you don’t have a permanent address, you can give information about the area in which you live.
